Value Creation Architecture

A short sample of exciting, impactful projects based on Value Creation Architecture

(Canadian Based) Rural Healthcare is in Crisis, Canada and Globally

Challenge: A group of Canadian Medical Specialists recognized the inequality for rural populations to access medical specialists’ expertise. They had committed 10 years in trying to use technology to bridge the physical distance to support rural family doctors in urgent and emergency care.  This dedicated team believed in the potential to save and improve lives but had to mostly self-fund and staff the initiative. The technology developers selected under delivered in capability and overpriced the scope.

Value Creation in Action: Fascinated by this incredible group of Specialists who dedicated their time and money to support rural healthcare, I committed to help apply a Value Creation Architecture to the problem. Leveraging my IBM experience creating Canadian and Global healthcare solutions I applied a first principles approach. The team had previously focused on emergency medicine however through additional research and interviews with rural doctors the demand for non-emergency support was even greater. I developed a business model that could self-fund and provide sustainability with a global expansion potential. The medical team then asked me to lead the new initiative as CEO. I created a unique and memorable branding for doctors to recall Fusion Universal Healthcare (FU.Healthcare). I recruited an incredible group of experienced technology leaders to architect and build out a cloud based mobile solution. Within 4 month we launched 1.0 to support our first contract supporting 65 nurses caring for homeless communities. The next month we launched 2.0 version to provide 24/7 support to medical teams providing medical care for rural mining sites of over 1,000 workers. We reduced medical evacuations from 2 per day to 1-2 per week. We are now expanding the solution with a 3.0 version to other rural communities.

(US Based) Manufacturing SW Company creating onshore efficiency advantage

Challenge: A startup Mfg SW company leveraging AI / Cloud / IOT / Advanced Analytics developed a next generation software platform to radically improve the efficiency of manufacturing through advanced analytics and automated process flow technology with an object-oriented architecture. They have organically grown while maturing and advancing the platform. The founder engaged with me to develop a go to market, GTM, strategy and to see it through to execution.

Value Creation in Action: This is currently a multi-phase project. First, development of an industry specific Value Creation Framework to capture the qualitative and quantitative impact that can be delivered. Second, identify competitors and collaborators. Third, create a pricing model that will span from early adopters to global scale up. Fourth, launch a strategy inclusive of marketing, sales and post-sales client relationship and satisfaction management set to a global expansion. This phase included a global business partner model so that the speed of expansion can be realized.

(US based) Healthcare SW Company developing AI cancer detection capabilities

Challenge: This Company’s AI capabilities are being validated by one the largest US University Health Networks but to proceed they need a balanced and mutually beneficial collaboration and commercialization agreement with the University. Previous to my engagement by the founders, the University was attempting to utilize their “standard” collaboration and license agreement to subvert IP ownership from the company.

Value Creation in Action: Leveraging my years of experience in complex contract negotiations I was able to lead the negotiation with the University to establish a balanced collaboration and commercialization contract structure and protect the companies IP ownership. Additionally, I provided a Clinical Value Impact dynamic model to improve investors’ confidence and support the GTM strategy, inclusive of the pricing strategy.

Develop the IBM Ontario Public Sector Cloud strategy

Challenge: The ability to sell into public sector required individual RFX’s or a longer-term vendor of record to achieve volume and repeatability. In the summer of 2019, the Government of Ontario released three VOR RFX’s to encompass: 1. Cloud Professional Services, 2. Cloud Software and 3. IaaS/PaaS environments.

Value Creation in Action: I had leadership responsible for the strategy, execution and success of the three submission bids which spanned the six IBM divisional borders of Global Business Services, Global Technology Services, Cloud, Software Group, Red Hat and Hardware Systems Group. The term “herding cats” would be an understatement when you take into consideration the competing agendas to individual success between divisions. We were able to win all three VOR and in early 2021 we completed eight months of intense negotiations to successfully sign a uniquely positioned contract focused on the provincial needs of Ontario Public Sector and IBM’s delivery capabilities. This contract is positioned to deliver in excess of $100m.

(US based) Health Insurance Company with a solution based on Blockchain

Challenge: The cost of healthcare in the US is almost twice any other developed county per capital. The leading cost drive in due to inefficiency in delivery and a for profit-based model for the payer and the provider.

Value Creation in Action: I was engaged by the two founders to bring an expert team together to provide guidance on selection of Blockchain technology for the health cost sharing approach. I then lead the development of an MVP utilizing collaboration with an Ontario based Higher Education Instruction. I also collaborated to further develop the health cost sharing business model including the value articulation and go to market strategy. The founders have put this project on hold due to the global Covid impact.

eHealth Provincial Ontario Yellow Card Immunization Program reimagined to the IBM Cloud

Challenge: The provincial yellow card immunization program based on a physical yellow paper card was not able to accurately or efficiently take immunization.

Value Creation in Action: Working in close collaboration with the province I secured IBM investment resources and cloud platform to develop an MVP of a mobile app. I also engaged resources from the Mohawk College MEDIC applied research program.

(Ontario based) Hospital improving patient quality and delivery efficiency with BPM

Challenge: Healthcare delivery is challenged with quality and cost in the delivery of services due in a large part because of the lack of consistency and standardized delivery of care. In collaboration with the hospital Chief Medical Officer and CIO we tested our thesis that Business Process Management technology could be the conductor to orchestrate and standardize process flow.

Value Creation in Action: As the concept lead to this initiative, I secured the IBM investment resources to build out the initial MVP. Upon this success the hospital invested $2m for the first production phase. This project became a success with over 100 client visits to the hospital, and globally replicated as Clinical Process Management. One of the achievements at the hospital was to reduce their oncology wait time from 72 days to 3 days. We integrated the system capability with their LEAN processes.
